Why does the cultivation of rice require a lot of manual labour?

With reference to rice cultivation, Why does the cultivation of rice require a lot of manual labour?

Rice has to be transplanted in puddled fields for better crop / it has to be harvested carefully by sickle - all this require lot of labour.
